Did you know June 2012 was National Environment Month celebrated under the UN approved theme: Green Economy: Does it include you?
National Environment Month is an annual event on South Africa’s environment calendar. The 2012 celebration focussed on the significance of the green economy and celebrations were aimed at showcasing the work South Africa is doing in the preservation of the environment as well as the creation of job opportunities.
According to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), a green economy is “one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. In its simplest expression, a green economy can be thought of as one which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive.”
